How to judge the fault of dry-type transformer by the abnormality of various sounds

Dry type transformers have no noise during operation, which is a very normal phenomenon. However, sometimes there may be a lot of noise, which indicates that the fault of the transformer can be determined by the sound. In fact, the sound of dry-type transformers can also indicate whether there is any damage. Generally speaking, if there are several issues with the sound of a dry-type transformer, it indicates that the transformer has malfunctioned and needs to be repaired. When common dry-type transformers encounter these sound problems during operation, it indicates that your dry-type transformer is already broken. Let’s take a closer look at it below:

Dry type transformers have noise. If the sound of the transformer increases compared to normal and there is obvious noise, but there is no obvious abnormality in the current and voltage, it may be caused by the loosening of internal clamps or screws that press the iron core, resulting in increased vibration of the silicon steel sheet.

Dry type transformers have discharge sound. If partial discharge occurs inside or on the surface of the transformer, there will be “crackling” discharge sound mixed in the sound. When this situation occurs, if blue corona or sparks can be seen near the transformer bushing at night or in rainy weather, it indicates severe contamination of the porcelain parts or poor contact of the equipment clamps; If the internal discharge of the transformer is due to electrostatic discharge of ungrounded components or poor contact discharge of the tap changer, the transformer should be further tested or stopped.

Dry type transformers have a boiling sound of water. If the sound of the transformer is mixed with boiling water and the temperature changes sharply, causing the oil level to rise, it should be judged as a short-circuit fault in the transformer winding or severe overheating caused by poor contact of the tap changer. At this time, the transformer should be immediately stopped for inspection.

Dry type transformers have a popping sound. If there is uneven cracking sound mixed in the sound of the transformer, it is due to insulation breakdown inside or on the surface of the transformer. At this time, the transformer should be immediately stopped for inspection.
