Difference between dry-type transformer and oil-immersed transformer

The difference between dry-type transformers and oil immersed transformers:

1. The load-bearing capacity varies. Generally, dry-type transformers should operate at their rated capacity; The overload capacity of oil immersed transformers is better.

2. Different packaging forms. Dry type transformers can directly see the iron core and coil; However, oil immersed transformers can only see the transformer casing.

3. Insulation and heat dissipation are different. Dry type transformers generally use resin insulation, natural air cooling, and large capacity fan cooling; Oil immersed transformers are insulated with insulating oil, and the heat generated by the coils is transferred to the transformer’s radiator through the circulation of insulating oil inside the transformer.

4. The casing forms are different. Dry type transformers often use silicone rubber sleeves; Oil immersed transformers often use porcelain bushings.

5. Different costs. The purchase price of dry-type transformers with the same capacity is much higher than that of oil immersed transformers.

6. Different capacities and voltages. Dry type transformers are generally suitable for power distribution, with capacities mostly below 2000kVA and voltages below 10kV, some of which can reach voltage levels of 35kV; Oil immersed transformers can achieve all required capacities and voltage levels can reach all voltages.

  • Different applicable locations. Dry type transformers are commonly used in places that require “fire and explosion prevention”, and are generally suitable for large and high-rise buildings; But oil immersed transformers are mostly used in places where fire occurs due to the excavation of an “accident oil pool” caused by oil spraying or leakage outside the room after an “accident”.
